Ronda Rousey knocked out by Holly Holm one year ago today, November 14
This past weekend mixed martial arts fans witnessed one of the biggest fight cards in history, UFC 205. The event was held 23 years to the day after the first UFC was held in Denver, Colorado on November 12, 1993.
Two days later we look back at one of the most shocking yet most memorable knockouts the sport has ever seen. One year ago today, on November 14, 2015, one of the biggest stars of the sport, Ronda Rousey was knocked out for the very first time.
Holly Holm delivered a vicious head kick to the then undefeated UFC women’s bantamweight champion. The challenger then rushed in with a flurry of punches to the already stunned Rousey before referee Herb Dean called an end to the contest.
Fans that filled Etihad Stadium in Melbourne, Australia for the UFC 193 card were floored. Fight fans, young girls, and most everyone else who witnessed it, needed a moment to let it all sink it.
One of the most dominant champions had been dethroned and done so in spectacular fashion.
Seeing Ronda Rousey knocked out and lying on the canvas, bleeding, and then the virtual disappearance from the sport and media all together for the next few months was something that nobody would have predicted, but it happened.
Holm would go on to defend her title against Miesha Tate at UFC 196 only to lose the belt that night, her first defense. Then, Tate defended against Amanda Nunes at UFC 200. She too would lose.
Now, at UFC 207, Ronda Rousey will make her long awaited return to the UFC and mixed martial arts. Will Amanda Nunes follow the same path as Holm and Tate, losing the belt in her first defense?
