Shane Burgos out-wrestles Yamato Nishikawa, picks up first promotional win at PFL 6

The Professional Fighters League returns to us tonight, June 23, 2023, for PFL 6, going down live from the Overtime Elite Arena in Atlanta, Georgia.

Headlining the event is a lightweight encounter between 2022 champion Olivier Aubin-Mercier (18-5) and Challenger Series alum Anthony Romero (12-1), each talent of which has gone 1-0 thus far into the year.

Co-headlining the event is a welterweight bout showcasing another 2022 champion in Sadibou Sy (14-6-2), who takes on Shane Mitchell (13-5) later in the evening.

Our feature fight of the night came in the lightweight division between UFC veteran Shane Burgos (16-4) and 20-year-old Japanese standout Yamato Nishikawa (21-5-6), each of which had gone 0-1 thus far into their respective PFL tenures with defeats coming earlier this year in April at PFL 3.

Continue reading to see how this lightweight encounter went down:

Official Result: Shane Burgos def. Yamato Nishikawa via unanimous decision (30-26, 30-26, 30-26)

Burgos gets to work with his boxing once the bout begins, before settling in on a takedown, which he secures about two minutes into the opening round.

Burgos takes Nishikawa down immediately once the second begins, and keeps him there the entire round. He does the same in the third as well, though he waits about 90 seconds before absolutely slamming Nishikawa down to the mat. He again stays on top in Nishikawa’s guard for the remainder of the round.

This wasn’t the most eventful fight, but Shane Burgos has picked up his first win inside the PFL cage following defeat to 2022 lightweight champion Olivier Aubin-Mercier earlier this year in April.

I became a fan of combat sports when I was 12 years old. I was scrolling through the channels and landed upon Versus, where WEC was televised. Urijah Faber fought Jens Pulver for the second time that night. That's the first fight I ever saw, and I was immediately hooked. So eventually, I began covering the sport in the fourth quarter of 2018, and have since started writing about animals as well.
