Smilla Sundell, ONE Championship strawweight Muay Thai champ, open to new challenges
Smilla Sundell is the reigning ONE Championship strawweight Muay Thai champion.
At just 17-years of age, the Swede now fighting out of Thailand, claimed the vacant title earlier this year with a unanimous decision victory over Jackie Buntan at ONE 156.
In a recent interview with Tom Taylor of the South China Morning Post, the newly crowned champion talked about future opportunities including defending her title against atomweight striking superstar Anissa Meksen.
“I can do that,” the 17-year-old told the Post when asked about fighting Meksen. “I would do that. I’ll fight anyone. I like challenges.
“That would be very cool actually, because she’s got a big name.”
Sundell didn’t stop there either. The rising star said that she is hoping to fight again one more time before the year is out, whether it’s against Meksen or another contender in the strawweight Muay Thai division.
She would also like to test herself if kickboxing and then eventually MMA.
“I think kickboxing, it won’t have to be too long because it’s very similar to Muay Thai, but MMA is a different kind of thing, so I think will take like two years maybe,” she said.
As of press time, Smilla Sundell currently does not have her next bout scheduled.
