Stevie Ray shockingly submits Anthony Pettis at PFL 5

The Professional Fighters League returns to us tonight, June 24, 2022, for PFL 5, going down live from the Overtime Elite Arena in Atlanta, Georgia.

Tonight’s event is to showcase our lightweight & heavyweight divisions and is to be headlined by a heavyweight bout between Bruno Cappelozza (15-5) and Matheus Scheffel (15-8).

Co-headlining the event is a lightweight bout between former WEC & UFC lightweight champion Anthony Pettis (25-12) and fellow UFC veteran Stevie Ray (23-10).

Official Result: Stevie Ray def. Anthony Pettis via submission (body triangle) at 3:57 of round two

Pettis opens up the bout with an axe kick, which lands, and follows it up with a flying knee about 30 seconds later, which doesn’t land. He then lands a couple hard body kicks before Ray shoots on a takedown, but is unable to secure it and he’s reversed along the fence.

Once separated, Pettis gets back to his beautiful striking.

Ray is pressuring him with heavy boxing however, and is controlling the center of the octagon.

Pettis had a very good first half of the first round, and Ray had a good latter half.

Ray continues with the pressure into the second, and forces a shot out of the former champion. Ray stuffs it and ends up taking Pettis’ back. Pettis is able to circle into Ray’s guard, but not entirely, before he’s forced to tap, as his spine is being cranked on.

This is actually the second time this has happened to Pettis, it happened in his fight with Dustin Poirier as well.

Such a rare submission to see, and it’s happened to Pettis a number of times now. Wow, congratulations to Stevie Ray on the most impressive victory of his long career.

I became a fan of combat sports when I was 12 years old. I was scrolling through the channels and landed upon Versus, where WEC was televised. Urijah Faber fought Jens Pulver for the second time that night. That's the first fight I ever saw, and I was immediately hooked. So eventually, I began covering the sport in the fourth quarter of 2018, and have since started writing about animals as well.
