Stipe Miocic says eye is healing, aiming for summer return against Daniel Cormier
Stipe Miocic has set out the timeframe for his return to the Octagon.
The UFC heavyweight champion in Miocic defeated Daniel Cormier at UFC 241 by fourth-round TKO to win reclaim the heavyweight strap. Yet, in the scrap, he was poked in the eye several times and sustained serious damage to his eye.
Since the fight, he has been focusing on healing his eye and without much of an update, he has finally give one.
“Eye is really good actually,” Miocic told TMZ Sports (via MMAJunkie). “It’s healed up, it’s getting better every day and getting back to training slowly.”
Since the win at UFC 241, Stipe Miocic has said he wants to fight someone he hasn’t fought before. So, that ruled out the Cormier trilogy or Francis Ngannou rematch.
Yet, UFC president Dana White said they want the rematch and Cormier said he only has one fight left in him and that is the Miocic rematch.
Now, for the heavyweight champion, he says he is looking at a summertime return. It appears he will be fighting Cormier again.
“It’s looking like summer,” Miocic said. “I think a lot of these fight [dates] are booked up, so probably about summertime. Yeah, [the Cormier trilogy is] what the UFC wants. I’m not the matchmaker. If I was the matchmaker, I wouldn’t be fighting.”
Should the trilogy bout happen, it will be Cormier’s last fight of his Hall of Fame career. For Stipe Miocic, he says it is unfortunate that ‘DC’ will have to end his career on a two-fight losing streak.
“It sucks for him,” Miocic said. “He’s going to lose again.”
It is good that Miocic’s eye is healing up as the heavyweight division needs to move on as Stipe and Cormier have held up the division since 2018 when ‘DC’ KO’d Miocic in the first fight.
