Write about something that’s important to you
Gail Houston, a content specialist who works with Essay Writing Service says that you should write about something that is important to you.
An admissions essay is the first time anybody will see your work. This is where you show the admissions officers what you are capable of. The best way to do that is to choose a subject that is important to you. If something is important to you, then you will probably have a lot to say about it. That’s good. It gives you a lot to work with.
You want people to see how well you can grapple with a subject. If you have a lot to say, there is more opportunity to show people how you work. More writing means more opportunities to show how good you are. Remember that a lot goes into writing an essay. You need to show that you are capable of handling everything.
Start with a Template
The best place to start is with a template. If you are unsure about any aspect of an admissions essay, this will help.
Try and get your hands on some short essay examples, there are a lot of sites where you can find pre-written essays about sport or any other topics. These will serve two purposes:
- You will be able to construct your outline more efficiently using the example
- You will see how people deviate from the ‘normal’ essay structure.
Start with a template, and lay everything out before you start writing. A template is very useful because it can be whatever you need it to be. You can have the major points of your essay in it. You can use it to store important information. You can use it for your notes. A template is whatever you want it to be, so it will always be helpful.
Brush Up Your Grammar and Spelling
Do you need help with your essay? Go to an essay writing site, and they will help you with essays on sport or any other topic you might need. Spelling and grammar is important for any essay, but particularly so here. Admissions essays are the first time that anybody will see your work. You need to impress people with what you can do!
The people who read your essay will be looking for reasons why you should be admitted. Spelling and grammar is a huge indicator of how good your work is, and it shows that you know how to format a college essay. Bad spelling and grammar can actively get in your way when you are trying to get an idea across. It is also a sign of sloppiness. By the time you are writing admission essays, you should know the basic rules of grammar. Bad spelling and grammar means you either don’t know about them, or don’t care about them. Either of these is bad.
Use Specific Examples
The best college application essays are the ones that are specific. Be very careful not to get too caught up in your subject. Nobody wants to read your tangents and asides. They want you to get to the point quickly and clearly.
Use specific examples in your essay, and you will get on much better. You want people to see the argument or event in the essay from your point of view. So, it is much better to give them specific examples which will help them visualise it. More generalised examples will not have the same effect.
Specific examples are also good for showing that you can do effective research. It says you can take a problem, and come up with a specific example to help people understand.
No repeats
This is the answer to any questions about how you write a good essay. No repeats. Don’t repeat yourself – you will just look like you are confused.
Repeating yourself could be seen as a sign that you didn’t have enough to say. Remember that all your work needs to be original. The way an essay is set up is to fully discuss a certain topic. Every paragraph (outside of the introduction and conclusion) needs to have a specific argument that is distinct from the others. If you repeat yourself, then you haven’t written the essay properly. Repetition is bad because it shows that you have no skills in research, among other things. This is a huge problem for you. You may not get in to college because you ended up repeating yourself.
Answer the question being asked
Elise Walker, an academic writer with Essay Basics, states that people writing admissions essays should always answer the question asked.
While this might seem obvious, you can very easily find yourself in the position of going off course. You could misunderstand the question for a start! You could also find yourself veering off course by accident.
The first step is, of course, to make sure that you fully understand the question. Break it down into its component parts, and look at them all. This will cut down on any potential misunderstandings later.
The second step is to make sure that you always have the question nearby. This lets you refer to it constantly. Being able to check everything against the question you are answering is a huge help. It will keep you on topic, and let you see if anything does not fit your answer.
Have at least one other person edit your essay
How long should college essays be? It can vary. It’s too easy to get caught up in your own essay. You can end up writing so much more than is required. At this stage it is best to bring a friend in to help you.
When you spend a long time with one particular essay, you can become a bit blind to it. A friend can be a huge help in these cases. He or she will be able to see what you have missed. You can save yourself a lot of marks just by asking a friend for help! This also applies to an essay that is too long. A friend who has not seen your essay before will have fresh eyes. Ask them which bits of essay you should take out, and which you should leave in.
