Tony Ferguson ‘would love’ to fight Dustin Poirier next
Tony Ferguson has his eyes on Dustin Poirier for his next fight.
Ferguson and Poirier were linked to a fight at UFC 254 in Abu Dhabi but it did not come to fruition. They have also been atop the lightweight division for years now but they have yet to fight, but Ferguson is looking to change that.
‘El Cucuy’ is currently on a four-fight losing streak and coming off a vicious KO loss to Michael Chandler but he still remains in the top-10 at lightweight. Along with that, Poirier has been itching for a fight so Ferguson hopes the UFC can book the fight.
“I would love to be able to fight Dustin Poirier,” Ferguson told MMA Junkie. “Obviously he likes to go stand-up. A stand-up battle wouldn’t be bad.”
Although Tony Ferguson says he would love to fight Dustin Poirier next, it’s uncertain if that will come to fruition. Poirier has made it clear he wants Nate Diaz next while also opening up the door to a fight against Colby Covington. However, Ferguson believes the fight makes sense and is one that the fans would like.
But, before the fight can even be made, Ferguson will need to properly heal following the KO loss and he says he is not thinking of when he will return. Instead, he says he will reach out to the UFC and tell them when he is ready to fight again.
“When I’m ready to fight I will let the UFC know,” Fergusons said. “I guarantee you they’ll let me know, too, ‘Hey, this is who we have.’”
Tony Ferguson, as mentioned, is on a four-fight losing streak having been KO’d by Chandler, and lost back-to-back decision losses to Beneil Dariush and Charles Oliveira while the losing skid started with a TKO loss to Justin Gaethje for the interim title. His last win came over Donald Cerrone at UFC 238 in June of 2019.
