Tyron Woodley says he has to do what ‘GSP’ did
Tyron Woodley was making his case of being the greatest welterweight ever. He had racked up title defense after title defense, but at UFC 235 that all came crashing to a halt. Woodley got dominated for all five rounds to Kamaru Usman who became the new welterweight champion.
Now, it is reported that Woodley will return to the Octagon to take on Robbie Lawler in the main event of UFC Minneapolis. Meanwhile, Woodley believes a win over Lawler could very well get him another title shot. And, Woodley knows he needs to do what future Hall-of-Famer, Georges St-Pierre did when he lost to Matt Hughes.
“Now I got to do similar to what Georges St-Pierre did when he lost to Matt Hughes and had to come back and avenge that, and lost to Matt Serra and had to come back and avenge that,” Woodley said on Ariel Helwani’s MMA Show.
“I thought that everything was on the up-and-up now — don’t have to struggle this much with the promotion, don’t have to struggle this much with the game plan. Had that pretty much down. Not that I got comfortable, but I thought my days of struggling was over.
“But they keep telling me the comeback is going to be so severe, it’s going to be so vicious that God had to [bring] me to this point. And when I come back, I’m not going to be able to even imagine what’s in store for me. So that’s kind of where I’m at mentally right now.”
For now, Woodley is up there in the talks for the greatest welterweight ever. And, ‘The Chosen One’ believes he will regain the belt-like St-Pierre did and it will only make it that much better. First, Woodley will need to beat Lawler on June 29 at UFC Minneapolis.
