UFC 297 – The Good, the bad, and the ugly

UFC 297 marked the first payer view of the year and it was a great way to kick off 2024 with Dricus Du Plessis and Sean Strickland going to war in the main event.

Now that the event is over with, let’s review it by taking a look at the good, the bad and the ugly from UFC 297.

The review can also be seen in the video above.

The Good

The UFC 297 main event between Dricus Du Plessis and Sean Strickland.

Both fighters put on a show and were left battered at the end of their 25 minute contest which resulted in Du Plessis edging out Strickland by a split decision.

With the win, Du Plessis became the first fighter from South Africa to win a UFC championship.

If this main event is any indication as to what were in for in 2024, then it means all fight fans will see some great fights here in the new year.

The Bad

Marya Bueno Silva in her co-main event loss.

Silva squared off with Raquel Pennington for the vacant bantamweight championship. She was well deserving of the fight after submitting Holly Holm in 2023.

Prior to the fight, Silva was pumping up the matchup at the UFC 297 press conference saying that Pennington isn’t on her level.

All those prior roads traveled before fight night all ended up meaning nothing as Silva had a bad showing after gassing out early into the fight and easily losing the fight by unanimous decision.

The Ugly

Mike Malott for his loss to Neil Magny.

Malott was off to a great start after winning the first two rounds of the fight, but all that meant nothing as he got stopped with 15 seconds left in the contest.

Doesn’t get much harder than that.

Malott still has a high ceiling and hopefully will use the loss as a learning experience as he has all the tools to be a contender in the welterweight division.
