UFC 307 adds Stephen Thompson vs Joaquin Buckley
UFC 307 is shaping up to be one of the most stacked events of the year, featuring several very intriguing match ups.
The most recent of those bouts come in the light-heavyweight and welterweight divisions, as Alex Pereira (11-2) is set to defend his title against Khalil Rountree (13-5) in the main event, and surging welterweight contender Joaquin Buckley (19-6) will get a crack at two-time former title challenger Stephen Thompson (17-7-1).
UFC 307 is to go down on October 5, 2024, live from the Delta Center in Salt Lake City, Utah.
No. 11 ranked Joaquin Buckley fought up at 185 lbs through his first two and a half years in the promotion, going 5-4 across nine appearances, but dropped down to 170 lbs back in May of 2023 and has gone 4-0 since with wins over the likes of Andre Fialho (TKO), Alex Morono (UD), Vicente Luque (TKO), Nursulton Ruziboev (UD).
Buckley had some good wins up at middleweight too, picking up a Knockout of the Year award in 2020 for his jumping spinning back kick KO of PFL light-heavyweight champion Impa Kasanganay, as well as wins over Jordan Wright (KO), Antonio Arroyo (TKO), Abdul Razak Alhassan (SD), and Albert Duraev (TKO).
‘New Mansa’ would however fall short in his bouts with Kevin Holland (TKO) and Alessio Di Chirico (KO), before losing his last two-straight in the division against current no. 4 ranked Nassourdine Imavov (UD) and no. 15 ranked Chris Curtis (KO), prompting his move down to welterweight where he’s gone on a real tear thus far.
No. 9 ranked ‘Wonderboy’ on the other hand has been there and done that, picking up impressive wins over the likes of Robert Whittaker (TKO), Jake Ellenberger (KO), Johny Hendricks (TKO), Rory MacDonald (UD), Jorge Masvidal (UD), Vicente Luque (UD), Geoff Neal (UD), and Kevin Holland (TKO) in his day.
Thompson is aging however at 41 years old, and Buckley seems to be entering his peak having just turned 30 years of age in April.
Will the 57-0 kickboxer Stephen ‘Wonderboy’ Thompson’s striking skills get him the win in this fight, or does Buckley find his way inside the range of the karate master and land one of those devastating bombs of his?
