UFC looking to book Michael Chandler vs. Tony Ferguson
The UFC is looking to book a lightweight banger in the very near future.
On Wednesday night, UFC president, Dana White did a Q&A on ESPN+ with Laura Sanko where he revealed the promotion is looking to book Chandler vs. Ferguson. However, he makes it clear the fight has not been signed yet as it is only being talked about.
Michael Chandler (22-7) is just 1-2 in the UFC but has put on three exciting fights. In his debut, he scored a TKO win over Dan Hooker in January. He then was set to face Charles Oliveira for the vacant lightweight title in May where he won the first round 10-8 and nearly finished the Brazilian. However, just seconds into the second round, Chandler was dropped and finished. The former Bellator lightweight champion made his return in November at UFC 268 against Justin Gaethje where the two threw down in arguably the best fight of 2021 but it was Gaethje winning by decision.
In his career, Chandler holds notable wins over Benson Henderson, Patricky Pitbull, Brent Primus, Eddie Alvarez, Goiti Yamauchi, and Derek Campos among countless others. He’s currently ranked fifth at lightweight.
Tony Ferguson (25-6) is on a three-fight losing streak and coming off back-to-back dominant decision losses to Beneil Dariush and Charles Oliveira. To start the losing streak, he suffered a TKO loss to Justin Gaethje at UFC 249 for the interim lightweight title. “El Cucuy” is ranked seventh in the division and before the three losses in a row, he was riding a 12-fight winning streak and was also the former interim lightweight champion.
During his winning streak, Ferguson had notable wins over Rafael dos Anjos, Anthony Pettis, Kevin Lee, Donald Cerrone, Edson Barboza, and Josh Thompson among countless others.
The fight between Michael Chandler and Tony Ferguson has been one that has been rumored ever since “Iron” signed with the UFC. Now, it appears it is close to happening as both men look to snap their losing streaks.
