Vasyl Lomachenko, George Kambosos Jr

Vasyl Lomachenko vs George Kambosos Jr set to fight on May 12 for IBF and IBO lightweight titles

Lightweight boxing stars Vasyl Lomachenko (17-3) and George Kambosos Jr (21-2) will reportedly square off this spring for the vacant IBF 135 lb championship.

This bout is to go down on May 12, 2024, live from Kambosos’ home country in Perth, Australia.

The IBF championship these two will be fighting for was vacated by former undisputed lightweight champion Devin Haney (31-0) last month in December of 2023 when he went up to the super-lightweight division to take the WBC 140 lb title from Regis Prograis (29-2).

Former WBO, WBA, and Ring Magazine lightweight champion Vasyl Lomachenko recently had a go against Haney himself back in May of last year, losing a heavily disputed decision (UD) against the fellow multi-division champion.

In fact, Lomachenko hasn’t wore world championship gold since his October 2020 defeat (UD) to Teofimo Lopez (19-1), who has also since moved up to 140 lbs to capture the WBO and Ring Magazine super-lightweight titles himself, becoming the first man to ever defeat Josh Taylor (19-1) in doing so.

Kambosos on the other hand also had a run in with Lopez, claiming the WBA, WBO, IBF, and Ring Magazine lightweight championships against him in November of 2021, the same titles Lomachenko lost to him short of the IBF belt Lopez walked into their fight with.

Following that victory Kambosos would lose back-to-back unanimous decisions to Devin Haney before claiming the IBO lightweight championship against Maxi Hughes (26-6-2) in July of 2023.

Now these two will battle it out for the vacant IBF lightweight championship, and also the IBO lightweight championship Kambosos currently holds.

Who walks away from this lightweight championship encounter with the IBF and IBO titles?

I became a fan of combat sports when I was 12 years old. I was scrolling through the channels and landed upon Versus, where WEC was televised. Urijah Faber fought Jens Pulver for the second time that night. That's the first fight I ever saw, and I was immediately hooked. So eventually, I began covering the sport in the fourth quarter of 2018, and have since started writing about animals as well.
