Is Vitor Belfort Truly Retiring After UFC 224?

Vitor Belfort injured, out of rematch with Wanderlei Silva

Former UFC light heavyweight champion Vitor Belfort has sustained a concussion and has been forced to withdraw from a rematch against Wanderlei Silva at Spaten Fight Night 2 in Sao Paulo, Brazil, on Sept. 27. A replacement is being sought but no official announcement has been made as of press time.

The boxing match was a rematch of an MMA bout that took place nearly 30 years ago under the UFC banner. In that outing in 1998, Belfort finished Silva just 44-seconds into the first round.

The “Phenom” Belfort and “Axe Murderer” Silva were to rematch in 2012 for the UFC but Belfort had to withdraw after suffering a broken hand.

Both Belfort and Silva have been inducted into the UFC Hall of Fame.  Combined the two men more than 90 professional mixed martial arts bouts.
