Yoel Romero open to Gegard Mousasi fight as long as it’s for the middleweight title
Yoel Romero has some interest in fighting Gegard Mousasi.
Romero is set for his second Bellator fight at Bellator Paris on Friday as he will face Alex Polizzi at light heavyweight. In his promotional debut, he suffered a decision loss to Phil Davis which extended his losing skid to four. Yet, he still remains a big name and for the Cuban, although he’s fighting at 205lbs, he says he still wants to move back down to middleweight to fight Gegard Mousasi for the middleweight title.
“Mousasi is a great fight. Every MMA fan wants to see us fight due to the trajectory in our careers,” Romero said at media day. “At this moment, at 205, it doesn’t interest me very much. I would love to face him at 185.”
According to Yoel Romero, why he wants to fight Gegard Mousasi at middleweight is because he wants to be a champion. He fell short in that goal in the UFC, despite having a couple of close fights against Israel Adesanya and Robert Whittaker for the title. Romero also beat Luke Rockhold but he missed weight so he didn’t win the interim title.
With that, he says his goal is to be a champion which is why he wants the Mousasi fight at middleweight, rather than Mousasi moving up.
“It has nothing to do with anything personal against Mousasi. It has everything to do with what he has,” Romero said. “If he jumps to 205, he’s not gonna have what I desire, so it’s in the interest of all the fans and myself. So I believe the fight would be better for 185.”
Yoel Romero, as mentioned, is on a four-fight losing streak and coming off the decision loss to Davis in a fight he thought was five rounds which he was mad that it wasn’t. His last UFC fight was the lackluster decision loss to Adesanya for the middleweight title.
