Yuneisy Duben had no money, UFC staff had to buy her groceries before Contender Series win
Yuneisy Duben and her 73-second knockout win over Shannon Clark on Dana White’s Contender Series went viral this week, but the fight almost didn’t happen.
According to UFC CEO Dana White, Duben almost didn’t make the trip to Las Vegas because she was literally “broke.”
“The biggest upset in the history of the Contender Series,” White said. “[UFC matchmaker] Mick [Maynard] was telling us that he was going through his text chain with her and her people, she almost didn’t come. She has no money.
“She doesn’t have a dollar to her name right now. … Her per diem got messed up and all this stuff, so the staff had to go grocery shopping for her, and then she comes in and does that. Let me tell you what, she ain’t broke now.”
The 28-year-old fighter from Caracas, Venezuela is now undefeated at 5-0 and was selected as one of the fighters this week to earn a contract with her victory.
Yuneisy Duben was a +1000 Underdog tonight and came in like a BEAST with one of the nastiest KO’s in #DWCS History and the biggest upset in the show’s history in 1:13 of the first round. I LOVE THIS SHOW!!!! pic.twitter.com/3ikOMkCjzp
