Alex Martinez edges Clay Collard on the cards in PFL 4 main event

The Professional Fighters League returns to us tonight, June 17, 2022, for PFL 4, going down live from the Overtime Elite Arena in Atlanta, Georgia, to showcase their lightweight and light-heavyweight divisions.

Headlining the event is a lightweight bout between UFC veteran Clay Collard and Alex Martinez, both of which have gone 1-0 thus far into the 2022 season.

Continue reading to see how this lightweight main event went down:

Official Result: Alex Martinez def. Clay Collard via split decision (29-28, 28-29, 29-28)

The first round is fought at an absolutely furious pace. Collard presses forward the entire time throwing heavy leather, and Martinez is able to land a lot of his own shots countering.

Collard goes for a number of takedowns in the middle of his combinations, but is unable to secure any until midway through the first he secures a body lock trip and reigns down some shots from top position.

Collard does however end the round on his back, as Martinez worked his way up and took him down in the final 15 seconds.

It’s looking pretty even through the first couple minutes of round two, up until Collard drops Martinez with a beautiful right hand and follows up with some ground and pound.

Martinez is able to work his way out of bottom position though and jumps on Collard’s back in a scramble, nearly finishing the fight right then and there with a very tight rear naked choke.

It’s probably 19-19 going into the third, whoever wins this round presumably wins the fight.

Collard is landing some nice combinations to start the third, going upstairs to Martinez’ head, as well as downstairs to his body. Martinez doesn’t like it and shoots, where he secures a takedown.

Martinez doesn’t stay on top for long however, and Collard is back to work on the feet, but again ends the round on his back, as Martinez secures yet another late takedown.

Collard started each round strong, and Martinez finished each round strong. A very close fight this turned into.

On the contrary, Alexander Martinez just picked up the biggest win of his career, improving his record to 10-2 (1 NC) in the process, and he’s now 2-0 in the PFL’s 2022 season. Not such a bad place to be.

I became a fan of combat sports when I was 12 years old. I was scrolling through the channels and landed upon Versus, where WEC was televised. Urijah Faber fought Jens Pulver for the second time that night. That's the first fight I ever saw, and I was immediately hooked. So eventually, I began covering the sport in the fourth quarter of 2018, and have since started writing about animals as well.
