Alex Oliveira injured by grenade fragments on Christmas Eve

UFC welterweight Alex Oliveira was injured by grenade fragments in Brazil yesterday. “Cowboy” Oliveira was in his home country of Brazil went to buy gasoline for his mother’s car on Christmas Eve when he saw members of his family involved in an altercation. Oliveira stopped his car, and moments later a grenade was thrown at his direction.

Oliveira told TV Rio Sul: “One guy came up and pointed a gun at my nephew’s face, and that’s when people started pushing each other. They had machetes, knives, a grenade. They threw a grenade in my direction. Fragments flew to my leg and my foot.”

As a result of the injuries went to a local hospital and underwent a small surgery on his leg to remove the fragments.

He last competed on December 8 where he lost to Gunnar Nelson in Toronto, Canada. The UFC 231 fight required the Brazilian mixed martial artist to receive 38 stiches in his forehead.
