Alexa Grasso upsets Valentina Shevchenko with submission win

Tonight, in the co-main event at UFC 285 in Las Vegas, Nevada, UFC women’s flyweight champion Valentina Shevchenko looked to make her eight consecutive title defense.

The 34-year-old “Bullet” was hoping to successfully defend her title against the challenger, Alexa Grasso.

The 29-year-old Grasso out of Guadalajara, Mexico had an impressive first-round, hurting the champion early with strikes.

That was quickly reversed by Shevchenko who decided to take the fight to the ground early in round two.  The champ sets up a crucifix and stars to tee off on Grasso’s face.  Once the fight gets back to the feet, Shevchenko takes it back down, ultimately ensuring points in favor of the Bullet.

Shevchenko realized that getting a takedown is what needs to be done and takes her opponent down multiple times in the third frame, looking to work for a choke.  As we enter the championship rounds, Grasso herself looks to finish with a choke.

Round four begins and just like any bout, it is contested on the feet.  Grasso finds a way to take Shevchenko’s back after the champ misses with a spinning back kick and does the unthinkable, submits the longest reigning UFC women’s flyweight champion.
