Alexander Gustafsson vs. Ben Rothwell in the works for May

Alexander Gustafsson is making a comeback to the UFC and this time he is eyeing the heavyweight division. After a long career in the light heavyweight division, Gustafsson could be making one last run at a shot at a UFC belt. He will be taking on Ben Rothwell according to a report by Frontkick.

The last time Gustafsson stepped foot in the Octagon, he was getting his feet wet in the heavyweight division. Gustafsson took a loss off of Fabrício Werdum in July of 2020. That loss was the third in a row for “The Mauler”, the former multiple-time light heavyweight title contender. In 2019 he decided to take some time off from fighting in the way of retirement but returned not even a year later. He had plans to return to 205 pounds in September against Paul Craig but had to withdraw due to injury. Now his sights are set on heavyweight.

Gustafsson had an amazing run in the light heavyweight division. If it weren’t for Jon Jones, Gustafsson could have been a champion. He lost twice to Jones and once to Daniel Cormier for the title. Many believe that he is the best light heavyweight to never win a title, perhaps with this heavyweight run, he could be trying to rectify that.

As for Rothwell, he has been a stay in UFC heavyweight division since 2009. He never had a title fight but was included in the top ten for years. He has since dropped out of the rankings and lost his last outing against Marcos Rogério de Lima.

This fight is said to be taking place on May 21, with the location yet to be determined. The rumored fight card to date is as follows:

Featherweight bout: Felipe Colares vs. Chase Hooper

Heavyweight bout: Alexander Gustafsson vs. Ben Rothwell
