Andrea Lee talks about her win over Cynthia Calvillo & what’s next
Andrea Lee has had a great year.
Coming into 2021, she was going through a tough stretch of her career in which she lost three straight fights by way of a controversial decision.
In May, Lee spoke with MyMMANews prior to her fight with Antonina Shevchenko and admitted that during her stretch of losses, she would spend to much time worrying about the outside pressures of rankings, title contention fights and things she ultimately could not control.
That’s when she made the mental switch to go drop out the outside noise and to just enjoy fighting and competing in the UFC. Since doing that, Lee is now back into title contention.
After beating Shevchenko in May, Lee was originally scheduled to fight Jessica Eye, however Eye would end up pulling out of the fight. Then on three weeks notice, Cynthia Calvillo stepped in for Eye and just like that Lee had the chance to fight someone ranked in the top five of the flyweight division.
Lee made the best of the opportunity as she outclassed Calvillo for two rounds before Calvillo, who broke her orbital bone in the fight, didn’t come out for the third and final round.
The win now moves Lee up to No. 7 in the world and she’s hoping that she’s now a fight away from earning a shot at the long-time flyweight queen Valentina Shevchenko. Nonetheless, she is thrilled to be once again in the contention and is expecting a big fight in her next outing.
Following her win over Calvillo at UFC Vegas 42, Lee once again spoke with MyMMANews to break down her performance and talk about her spot in the division.
You can watch her full interview in the video above.
