Bellator 194 results – Roy Nelson vs Matt Mitrione

Bellator MMA holds Bellator 194 tonight from the Arena at the Mohegan Sun in Uncasville, Connecticut.  The main card action begins on the Paramount Network beginning at 9 p.m. EST.

In the main event, the second fight in the Bellator MMA heavyweight Grand Prix as Roy Nelson and Matt Mitrione meet in the cage.  Chael Sonnen already recorded a win in the tournament when he defeated Quinton ‘Rampage’ Jackson in January.

In the co-main event, Patricky ‘Pitbull’ Freire takes on the equally impressive Derek Campos.  Also, former light heavyweight champion Liam McGeary battles Vadim Nemkov at 205 pounds.

Stand out boxers turned mixed martial artists, Heather Hardy and Ana Julaton will throw down at flyweight.  The two are set to compete in a boxing bout later down the road as well.

A very exciting bout between Tyler Hamilton and Pat Casey opened up the fight card.  The crowd was really behind from Springfield, Massachusetts who was making his pro MMA debut.  Hamilton, the local favorite from New London, Connecticut didn’t win a round on the judges’ scorecards as Casey was given 30-27 across the board.

Connecticut’s own Kastriot Xhema made quick work of his opponent Peter Nascimento to record his second pro win inside the Bellator MMA cage.

“The Blueprint” Marcus Surin recorded another win with a first round submission over Dean Hancock.  Hancock was submitted by way of an arm-triangle choke.

What a war Walter Howard vs. Jarod Trice was.  Aside from an accidental eyepoke that resulted in a point deduction, there was no break in the action.  This was a very close fight to score but Trice ends up with a majority decision win.

It only took 17 seconds for Regivaldo Carvalho to defeat Tom English by knockout.

Mike Kimbel made a statement tonight at the Mohegan Sun Arena when he landed a hard clean shot on Geoffrey Then that echoed so loud it could probably be heard on the casino floor.  Then then tried to lock up an armbar from the bottom but Kimbel lifted him up, slammed him, and knocked him out.  When referee Keith Petersen stepped in, Then thought tried to cling on to him.  Following the fight, Chael Sonnen entered the cage to interview Kimbel.  Bellator definitely has a star in the making.

Tywan Claxton and Jose Perez opened up the main card on Paramount Network.  The first round was lack luster until about the midway point when Claxton had a dominant top position and began his assault with big elbows and heavy shots from overhead.  The second round was even more dominant in favor of Claxton.  It was only a matter of time before the fight would be stopped and Claxton earned his second win under the Bellator MMA banner.

Former Bellator MMA light heavyweight champion Liam McGeary took on Stary Oskol, Russia’s Vadim Nemkov in the second fight on the main card.  Great first round for Nemkov as he stunned the former champion with several shots to include an uppercut combo.  The Russian also chopped the legs of McGeary with low kicks.  The round ended with Nemkov landing a takedown in the final second.  Should be a definite round for Vadim Nemkov.  McGeary is limping here in the second frame.  Nemkov continues the assault to the lower limbs.  Another solid round for Nemkov.  McGeary will need to finish this fight to get a win.  Big Dan Miragliotta is watching this fight closely as McGeary can barely walk around the cage.  Nemkov is relentless and will not stop.  The referee is forced to stop the fight as McGeary hobbles over and clutches on to his leg.

Heather Hardy weighed in slightly heavy yesterday at weigh-ins for her fight tonight with Ana Julaton.  As a result Hardy forfeits part of her purse to her opponent.  Hardy held on to a standing guillotine choke for what felt like forever in the first round.  Fans began to boo before Hardy dragged it down to the ground where she landed a few shots before applying a rear-naked choke from a side position.  The round ends and will go to the second frame.  More of the same, Hardy working for a choke but not really able to do much more than hold to it.  Lands a few strikes to the head of her opponent, but still not a very impressive fight as of yet as we enter the third and final round.  In the final five minutes, once again, the crowd boos, referee separates the two fighters.  Once back together again, Julaton has Hardy pressed up against the cage and Heather says, “I don’t know what to do.”  The fight goes the distance with Hardy getting the win in a rather non-impressive contest.

Derek Campos and Patricky Pitbull competed in the co-main event at 155 pounds.  The two men felt each other out for the first two minutes or so before real blows began to land.  Pitbull knocked Campos down with a left, followed by a right uppercut as Derek stood back up.  Then a powerful combo sent Campos back down to the canvas before the referee stepped in call and end to the contest.

The main event featured a rematch between Roy ‘Big Country’ Nelson and ‘Meathead’ Matt Mitrione.  The fight was part of the opening round of the Bellator MMA heavyweight grand prix.  Mitrione finding success on the feet, tagging ‘Big Country’ with quite a few shots.  Not until the final minute that Nelson gets a takedown.  The second round is more of the first.  Mitrione landing his shots perfectly, splitting Nelson open and once again, Nelson gets a takedown to the end the round.  Mitrione opens up the third round with a beautiful combo.   This time around Nelson lands the takedown earlier and lands a crucifix before he starts pounding away on Mitrione.  Very strong round for Nelson.
