Askren who is undefeated at 18-0 and 1 no contest, announced his retirement last year after he defeated Shinya Aoki. He was sent to the UFC after a massive trade deal just days ago that sent former UFC flyweight champion Demetrious Johnson to ONE.
Lawler (28-10-0, 1 NC) has earned one win and one loss since losing his UFC welterweight title to Tyron Woodley in July 2016. Lawler defeated Donald ‘Cowboy’ Cerrone by unanimous decision, but then dropped a fight to former lightweight champion Rafael Dos Anjos last December.
Neither Lawler or Askren have competed in 2018.
The proposed fight has not yet been made official by the UFC.
