Bill Algeo stops Herbert Burns in the second at UFC on ABC 3

The Ultimate Fighting Championship returns to us today, July 16, 2022, for UFC on ABC 3, going down live from the UBS Arena in Elmont, New York.

Headlining the event is a clash of top featherweight contenders, as former title challenger Brian Ortega (15-2) faces Yair Rodriguez (13-3) in the main event of the evening. Co-headlining the event is a women’s strawweight bout between Michelle Waterson (18-9) and Amanda Lemos (11-2-1).

Our preliminary feature bout came in the featherweight division between Bill Algeo (15-6) and Herbert Burns (11-3).

Official Result: Bill Algeo def. Herbert Burns via TKO (exhaustion) at 1:50 of round two

Burns opens up the bout attempting a body lock takedown, and while it initially gets stuffed, he does end up getting Algeo down about one minute into the opening round, and he immediately takes the back.

Algeo was giving his arm up, so Burns transitioned to a triangle choke in a beautifully seamless scramble.

It looks like the fight is going to be over right then and there, but Algeo is able to get out of it about two minutes later and he really begins to beat on Burns for the remainder of the round.

Burns is absolutely exhausted at this point.

At one point toward the end of the first, Algeo stood up out of Burns’ guard and it took Burns eight seconds to get up.

Once the first round was over, it took him 20 seconds to get back to his stool, and more of the same happens in the second. Algeo stands up out of Burns’ guard and Burns took far too long to stand back up, forcing the referee to stop the action.

It’s not very often you see fights stop via exhaustion these days. He started off so well, but it appears he put everything into that triangle choke earlier on and didn’t have anything left after it.

I became a fan of combat sports when I was 12 years old. I was scrolling through the channels and landed upon Versus, where WEC was televised. Urijah Faber fought Jens Pulver for the second time that night. That's the first fight I ever saw, and I was immediately hooked. So eventually, I began covering the sport in the fourth quarter of 2018, and have since started writing about animals as well.
