Billy Quarantillo climbs the ladder

After holding three events in the span of eight days in Jacksonville, Florida, the UFC returns to Las Vegas, Nevada for UFC on ESPN 9 tonight, Saturday, May 30.

Taking place at the UFC Apex, the event is headlined by former welterweight champion Tyron Woodley and rising star Gilbert Burns. In the co-main event, Blagoy Ivanov takes on Augusto Sakai in a heavyweight clash.

Victorious in their UFC debuts, featherweights Billy Quarantillo and Spike Carlyle meet in a catchweight bout at 150 lbs. Quarantillo is coming off a second-round triangle choke against Jacob Killburn at UFC on ESPN 7 in December 2019. 

Prior to his UFC debut, the 31-year-old finished Kamuela Kirk in the third round on Dana White’s Contender Series in July 2019. He is unbeaten in six consecutive bouts.

In his octagon debut, Carlyle finished Aalon Cruz via first-round TKO at UFC on ESPN+ 27 on Feb. 29. Entering his second fight this year, Carlyle is looking to add to his momentum. 

Carlyle is coming off five-straight victories.

ROUND 1

Carlyle comes forward with a knee, misses and then throws an elbow. Quarantillo goes down, but starts attacking from bottom. Carlyle survives the leg attacks and takes the back of Quarantillo. Carlyle has a body triangle and attacks Quarantillo’s neck. Carlyle resorts to ground and pound with heavy strikes. Carlyle goes for an arm bar, but Quarantillo defends. Carlyle is in Quarantillo’s full guard. Carlyle uses the fence to get off his back, but Quarantillo takes Carlyle’s back. Carlyle turns into a body lock and falls into the guard of Quarntillo. Carlyle works some ground and pound. Carlyle moves to side control, but Qurantillo tries to scramble. Quarantillo works up, but Carlyle returns him to the mat. Carlyle is in the full guard of Quarantillo. Carlyle lands heavy hammer fists. Quarantillo taking big punches late in the first. In a odd event, Carlyle gets up before the round ends and Quarantillo lands a punch from behind to end the round.

ROUND 2

Carlyle and Quarantillo meet in the center. Carlyle land s an elbow. Quarantillo gets the back of Carlyle and attacks the neck. Carlyle explodes and transitions to full guard. Quarantillo works up and uses the cage. Carlyle is in Quarantillo’s guard. Carlyle is breathing very heavy, but continues to work. Quarantillo gets to his feet, but Carlyle tries to take the back. Carlyle is high and Quarantillo attempts to sneak out the back. Carlyle adjusts and gets more control. Quarantillo is able to scramble and escape. Carlyle has a cut under his right eye. Quarantillo earns a takedown, but Carlyle works up and presses Quarantillo to the cage. Quarantillo returns the favor and reverses the position. Carlyle earns a takedown, defends a guillotine and is on top of Quarantillo. Quarantillo locks in a triangle, but Carlyle escapes. Qurantillo tries for a triangle again, but Carlyle defends. Carlyle ends round on top.

ROUND 3

Carlyle works for a takedown early, but Qurantillo sinks in the wizard and gets up. Quarantillo reverses and gets Carlyle to the mat. Quarantillo is on top and is in half guard. Quarantillo raining down some heavy elbows. Quarantillo gets in a choke, but Carlyle tries to turn. Carlyle escapes and is in Quarantillo’s guard. Quarantillo uses the cage to get up, but Carlyle gets behind Quarantillo. Quarantillo is able to get on top of Carlyle and takes the back. Carlyle is taking some damage this round. Quarantillo looking for a choke, resorts to ground and pound. Carlyle gets to his feet. Both guys swinging. Carlyle lands a kick, spins, Both guys trade and Quarantillo lands a left hook.
