Kingston, Ontario, Canada’s PJ Ste-Marie (1-4) will return stateside to compete once again for Maverick MMA. After dropping a hard fought fight to Christopher Piriz at Maverick 10 in November 2018, Ste-Marie will now meet Frankie Edgar prospect, BJ Young (3-2) on March 8 at Maverick 12.
“PJ has fought for us before and is not scared of anyone,” said Maverick MMA promoter Willy Sisca. “He came down from Canada to fight the always tough Chris Piriz at Maverick 10 and suffered an injury early in that fight and kept battling. He lost that fight, but gained everyone’s respect with his toughness and resiliency. We are honored to have him back in the Heptagon at full strength.”
Sisca expressed to MyMMANews that as thrilled as he is about having Ste-Marie return, he is just as excited to bring in one of the region’s top prospects in the “Rican Rebel.”
“Signing a young stud like BJ Young is a big statement for our brand,” Sisca said.
“We have a stable of next level stars that includes LJ Reboli, Mike Delouisa and Zach Haynes just to name a few,” Sisca continued. “We try to help build and guide our guys from the early parts of their career. As always, Maverick is all about the athletes and telling their stories. BJ has a great story and is one of the top young prospects out of the Northeast. I can’t wait for him to be in the spotlight near the top of the card, March 8. Fighting isn’t just something he does. It’s his life and his goals are to be a UFC champion one day. We are honored to help him move one step closer to that goal.”
“Rican Rebel” Young is coming off back-to-back losses for Ring of Combat and Cage Fury Fighting Championships. Prior to the two defeats, Young had won three straight for CFFC over the likes of Jamal Johnson, Solo Hatley, and Benjamin Allen. Prior to turning pro, Young had won all seven of his amateur fights.
Ste-Marie loss his first two pro fights but bounced back in his third to record a submission win over Corey Jackson in November 2017. He then went on to lose to both Serhiy Sidey and Piriz by strikes.
Maverick 12 takes place at the Sherman Theater in Stroudsburg, Pennsylvania.
