Braxton Amos Representing 97kg On Team USA in Greco-Roman
In a surprise announcement, Team USA’s 97 kilo wrestler G’angelo Hancock retired from competition. In his place, Wisconsin Badger sophomore Braxton Amos will take his spot on the team at the senior World Championships on September 12-18 for Greco-Roman wrestling.
Braxton Amos: Welcome to the team
While Braxton Amos is joining the team on short time, he is a great asset to Team USA. He came in runner up to Hancock for the team spot. After Hancock announced his retirement Mondday, Amos was the proper guy to call up.
His experience on the international level will not leave Amos out to dry at the World Championships, which take place in Belgrade, Serbia. In 2021 he was Junior World champion in freestyle and won bronze in Greco. He’s had success at the Pan-American events at both senior and junior levels.
Amos filling G’angelo Hancock’s shoes is a tough task. Hancock was an Olympian at the Tokyo Games and he came in seventh. He’s been on the World Team multiple times and has nabbed a bronze medal at the 2021 World Championships. He’s also won gold, silver and bronze in the Pan American Championships and silver in the Pan American Games.
Braxton Amos will come in to a strong wrestling team for Team USA going into Worlds. Thomas Gilman, Sarah Hildebrandt, Yianni Diakomihalis, Zain Retherford, Kyle Dake, Jordan Burroughs, David Tayler, J’den Cox, and Kyle Snyder are all names you can expect to see for Team USA at Worlds.
With Team USA having such success in Tokyo, bring home nine medals and three gold, expectations are high. There’s always Russia, Iran and Cuba putting together great teams and it will be another tightly contested World Championships.
