Charles Oliveira stuns Michael Chandler with comeback knockout

Charles Oliveira came from behind with a second-round TKO against Michael Chandler to become the new UFC lightweight champion at UFC 262 on Saturday, May 15.

After a slow start in round one where Chandler rocked Oliveira, the Brazilian needed just 20 seconds to put the former Bellator champion away. Oliveira landed a left hook that dropped Chandler. Chandler defended against the fence, but ate another left hook. 

Referee Dan Miragliotta was forced to step in.

The vacant lightweight championship is on the line as Charles Oliveira and Michael Chandler headline UFC 262 in front of 17,000 fans on Saturday, May 15.

The co-main event features another lightweight affair as Tony Ferguson faces Beniel Dariush inside the Toyota Center in Houston, Texas.

Oliveira, a 10-year octagon veteran, is closing in on his first world title after winning eight consecutive fights. He most recently out-pointed Tony Ferguson in a five-round unanimous decision victory at UFC 256 last December.

During this stretch, he defeated names like Kevin Lee, Jared Gooden, Jim Miller and Nik Lentz. His last defeat came via second-round TKO to Paul Felder at UFC 218 in December 2017. 

Chandler has a chance to become a UFC and Bellator champion. In his UFC debut, Chandler stunned Dan Hooker via first-round TKO at UFC 257 this past January. 

It marked his first bout outside of the Bellator cage since 2010. In his final Bellator appearance, Chandler knocked out Benson Henderson in the first round at UFC 243 in August 2020.

The two get in a scramble and Chandler attempts a guillotine choke. Oliveira escapes and then takes the back of Chandler. Chandler stands and slams Oliveira on his back. Oliveira locks in a body triangle. Oliveira is cut above his right eye. Chandler gets hand control escapes the position. Chandler rains down punches. Oliveira is throwing up kicks from his back. Oliveira gets to his feet. Chandler rocks Oliveira with a right hand. Chandler pours on ground and pound. Chandler is in Oliveira’s full guard. Chndler lands a right elbow. The pair meet in the center. Chandler works the jab early. Oliveira rocks Chandler with a left hook. Oliveira swarms with a knee to the body.

Chandler is defending against the cage. Oliveira chases and lands another left hook that puts Chandler to the canvas for good. Oliveira is the new UFC lightweight champion.
