Chase Hooper impressively stops Felipe Colares at UFC Vegas 55

The Ultimate Fighting Championship returns to us tonight, May 21, 2022, for UFC Vegas 55, headlined by former UFC women’s bantamweight champion Holly Holm and no. 6 ranked contender Ketlen Vieira.

Co-headlining the event is a welterweight bout between a pair of Brazilian strikers in Santiago Ponzinibbio and Michel Pereira.

Going down on the prelims earlier on in the event was a featherweight showcase between Chase Hooper (10-2-1) and Felipe Colares (10-3). Hooper has gone just 2-2 since joining the promotion, while Colares has gone 2-3 thus far.

Hooper did take nearly a year off following his latest appearance, and defeat however, presumably to work on his strength and striking. And today we saw if that was the correct choice.

Official Result: Chase Hooper def. Felipe Colares via TKO (punches) at 3:00 of round three

What a scramblefest this immediately turned into!

Hooper tries for a body lock takedown early on, but is denied and begins to eat some nasty body kicks from Colares.

Hooper is able to take Colares’ back in a scramble, but fails to secure his body triangle and ends up on bottom. He then sweeps Colares with an omoplata and is back on top.

Once Colares is back to his feet he gets taken back down and Hooper takes his back, making sure to lock in the body triangle this time. Hooper locks in a D’Arce choke toward the end of the round, but is unable to get the tap with it and ends the first in dominant position.

The second round was similar, with the two scrambling the entire time, but Hooper ended up on his back much more in the middle stretch, presumably losing the round. However, he was able to reverse position and get on top, securing mount for the final 30 seconds of the second.

It appears it’s 19-19 going into round three.

Hooper comes out and lands a nice boxing combo at the beginning of the third and handily secures a double leg takedown on the fatiguing Colares.

Hooper absolutely mauls Colares in this round, every scramble they had, he ended up on top.

Once securing mount again, Hooper reigns down some punches and elbows, before Colares is forced to give his back up. Hooper sinks in a rear naked choke that’s under Colares’ neck, but couldn’t quite secure it with his other hand, and he remains in back mount, where he gets the TKO victory.

I became a fan of combat sports when I was 12 years old. I was scrolling through the channels and landed upon Versus, where WEC was televised. Urijah Faber fought Jens Pulver for the second time that night. That's the first fight I ever saw, and I was immediately hooked. So eventually, I began covering the sport in the fourth quarter of 2018, and have since started writing about animals as well.
