Cheick Kongo signs new multi-fight deal with Bellator

Cheick Kongo will remain a Bellator fight for the foreseeable future.

Kongo is a top contender at heavyweight has signed a new multi-fight contract with the promotion according to MMAJunkie. The Frenchman has been with Bellator since 2015 and has had 15 fights in the promotion.

The 44-year-old is coming off fighting Ryan Bader for the heavyweight title where the bout ended in a no-contest due to an accidental eye poke by the champion. It was a major controversy where many didn’t know what happened, which Kongo explained later to BJPENN.com.

“Things happen, I got poked in the eye. You can see it clearly when he threw the uppercut, the uppercut didn’t connect. If you see the full video, the uppercut, it kept going up on the side of my head and hit my eye,” Cheick Kongo said. “First of all, it should make me head bounce if it connected. Second, when he tried to hit me with the uppercut and missed, his thumb poked me in the eye.

“At first, I thought I could take it, but after he took the thumb out of my eye, he had his hand around there and then poked me up the nose. The rule is clear if you poke the nose, the eye, you can get disqualified. At the end, when people are talking s**t, if I have to win it will be fairly, if I win on DQ it is bad. I also never got the chance to explain myself. Bader talked, but I didn’t, it seemed like I was put in the trash. For what? Because he poked me in the eye, like f**k…”

Currently, Cheick Kongo is 12-2 and one no-contest in Bellator with notable wins over Vitaly Minakov, Alexander Volkov, Augusto Sakai, Tim Johnson, and Javy Ayala.

The Frenchman does not have a fight booked but made it clear he wants the rematch against Bader. Whether or not he will get it is to be seen. But, the good news is Kongo is now under a new multi-fight deal with the promotion.
