Cody Garbrandt releases lengthy statement after loss to Rob Font: ‘I was fighting myself in there, battling myself’
Cody Garbrandt issued a statement following his decision loss to Rob Font on Saturday night in the main event of UFC Vegas 27.
Garbrandt was looking to extend his winning streak to two in a pivotal fight for the bantamweight division. Unfortunately for the former champ, the fight did not go his way as Font was landing his jab at will and landing heavy shots over five rounds to clearly win the fight. After the result, “No Love” took to Instagram Live to talk about the fight.
“Rob was the better man today,” Garbrandt said in an Instagram Live captured by Current MMA.” I just feel like I was fighting myself in there, battling myself, and I’m not taking anything away from him, congrats on his camp. First and foremost, thank God for keeping us both safe in there. A lot of positives come from this, brush it off, and get back with my coaches and teammates. We’re still striving to be the best and be the world champion.
“Sometimes there’s adversity that comes along in your dreams and makes you work harder, makes you realize what needs to be done, and makes it that much sweeter climbing up the mountain,” Garbrandt continued. “I’m just really thankful. I wanted to come on here and just tell you guys how much I appreciate and love your support. It’s very appreciated. I’m trying to fight my heart out for you guys. Thank you.”
With the loss, Cody Garbrandt is now just 1-4 in his last five. Prior to the loss to Font, he scored a highlight-reel KO over Raphael Assuncao after suffering three straight KO losses to Pedro Munhoz and TJ Dillashaw, twice to lose his belt.
After the loss to Font, it’s uncertain what will be next for Garbrandt. He will likely have to fight below him in the rankings as he looks to climb the ranks to another title shot.
