Conor McGregor reveals the UFC and Dana White knew his leg was injured heading into UFC 264
Conor McGregor has just left the hospital after receiving surgery to fix his broken leg suffered in the main event of UFC 264. The bout with Dustin Poirier was stopped by the in-cage doctor after it was clear that McGregor’s leg was broken. Following the fight, there were questions being asked by fans and people in the fight game on whether McGregor had a prior injury. Now days later, McGregor has come out on his Instagram to explain that yes, he did have a prior injury and that the UFC and their doctors knew about it.
“The leg is better than ever. I was injured going into the fight, people were asking me, ‘When was the leg broke? At what point did the leg break?’ Ask Dana White, ask the UFC, ask Dr. Davidson, the head doctor of the UFC, they knew I had a stress fracture in my leg going into that cage,” McGregor explained. “There was debate about pulling the thing out because I was sparring with no shin pads and I would kick the knee a few times so I had multiple stress fractures in the shin bone above the ankle. Then I have trouble with the ankle anyways. I was wrapping the ankle every training session.”
Due to the severity of the break, McGregor could be out of training for an extended length of time and out of competition for longer. Dana White himself does not expect McGregor to return for an entire year. The healing process will of course take time, but McGregor is in high spirits and seemed glad to have the leg fixed.
“I essentially got exactly what I needed,” McGregor went on to explain. “I needed to get treatment on the ankle, I needed to get treatment on the shinbone and I would have never committed to going under the knife unless something like this happened. What I needed was a titanium shin bone. Now I have a titanium rod from the knee to the ankle.”
Some fans believed that Conor McGregor could be ready to retire soon after this trilogy fight with Poirier, that does not seem to be the case. McGregor stated that he will be spending his immediate recovery in California, close to doctors, but is motivated to get back in the gym and continue his fight career. If there is one fighter on the UFC roster who does not need to fight, it is McGregor, but he loves the sport and will be back.
