Conor McGregor, UFC 229

Conor McGregor says he is in negotiations for his next fight

Conor McGregor is currently suspended by the Nevada State Athletic Commission (NSAC). But that doesn’t mean he isn’t talking about returning to the Octagon soon. The former champ-champ was last seen in the Octagon at UFC 229 where he lost Khabib Nurmagomedov in the fourth round by submission.

Following the fight, a post-fight melee took place. That resulted in several fighters including McGregor to be suspended by the NSAC. However, there has been plenty of talk of who McGregor would fight next. Donald ‘Cowboy’ Cerrone is right at the top of the list.

Ultimately, UFC President Dana White has said that fight isn’t going to happen. A reason why is partly due to the fact that they wanted McGregor as the co-main event. Now, McGregor was taking in a Boston Bruins game where he said his next fight is in the works.

“Yes, we’re currently in negotiations, we’re aiming for July, we’ll see what happens,” McGregor said, adding that he’s been staying in shape, even during his tour of the United States (transcript via MMA Mania). “I am staying ready. This morning, I was doing incline sprints on the treadmill on my program, the McGregorFast program, today in a hotel room. So we’re staying on it, getting work in as we go.”

Conor McGregor is hoping to get a rematch at Nurmagomedov. However, he will no doubt have to get another win to do so. The ‘Cowboy’ Cerrone fight made the most sense. But it is possible another top five lightweight like a Tony Ferguson or Al Iaquinta could make some sense. In the end, it is good to see the UFC’s biggest star in McGregor ready to fight again and fight fairly often. He hasn’t fought two or more MMA fights in a single year since 2016, where he was at the top of the sport.
