Cory Sandhagen opens up on why his fight with Dominick Cruz fell apart

Cory Sandhagen calls out Dominick Cruz: “I’ve always wanted to fight Cruz”

UFC bantamweight contender Cory Sandhagen called out former champion Dominick Cruz, saying that “I’ve always wanted to fight Cruz.”

Sandhagen is coming off of a spirited unanimous decision loss to interim champ Petr Yan back at UFC 267. It was a phenomenal fight, though Sandhagen ultimately came up empty-handed. According to his official record, Sandhagen is 0-2 over his last two fights with decision losses to Yan and TJ Dillashaw. But despite the two-fight losing streak, everyone knows how good of a fighter Sandhagen is. So despite his recent losing skid, fans should still fully expect Sandhagen to get a top-10 opponent in his next fight.

One of the top-10 ranked fighters who Sandhagen hasn’t fought yet is Cruz, the former UFC bantamweight champ. Cruz is coming off of back-to-back decision wins over Casey Kenney and Pedro Munhoz and he’s cemented himself in the top-10 of the weight class. So if the opportunity to fight him becomes available, then Sandhagen would have no problem signing on the dotted line to face him.

Speaking to MMAFighting.com’s The MMA Hour, Sandhagen revealed his interest in fighting Cruz.

“I’ve always wanted to fight Cruz, man,” Sandhagen said. “I’ve always wanted to fight him. If you’re going to press me real hard, man, he’s probably at the top of my list, especially because (Rob) Font wasn’t even really in that fight with (Jose) Aldo, from my understanding, even though I didn’t watch a ton of it — a lot of the judges had it 50-45, so if that was maybe more of a competitive fight, then Font would definitely interest me. Not to take anything away from Font, but Cruz did really well and Cruz is a legend, and he’s someone that I’ve watched and admired for a really long time, so that would be cool.”
