Dana White believes Leon Edwards could be new England superstar in UFC
Dana White has high praise for Leon Edwards.
Edwards, who has been on a roll in the UFC as of late, could very well be one fight away from a title shot. And, UFC president, Dana White believes Edwards could very well be the next superstar from England.
“Edwards is a rising star. This kid is mean, nasty, and aggressive,” Dana White said to BT Sport (via BJPENN.com). “His standup is phenomenal. That country [England] is up for grabs and waiting to be taken by somebody. If Edwards can become a world champion, that guy can be a big star over there.”
Leon Edwards is coming off of a decision win over Rafael dos Anjos in the main event of UFC San Antonio back in July. Before that, he edged out a split-decision win over Gunnar Nelson at UFC London in March. The Englishman is currently on an eight-fight winning streak with wins over Donald Cerrone, Vicente Luque, Bryan Barberena, and Peter Sobotta among others. His lost came back in 2015 when he dropped a decision to now champion, Kamaru Usman.
The Englishman has also been calling for a fight with former welterweight champion, Tyron Woodley to happen at UFC London. But, Woodley shut it down. He says he is not interested in going overseas for a fight, but Edwards did say the former champ is interested in the bout and it may happen just not in London.
According to Dana White, it is indeed a fight the UFC matchmakers are working on.
“We’re working on it,” White said.
By White’s comments, it seemingly means he believes Edwards is the bigger superstar over Darren Till. Till has headlined events in England but suffered back-to-back stoppage losses to Tyron Woodley and Jorge Masvidal. Yet, he is coming off of a decision win over Kelvin Gastelum at UFC 244 in his middleweight debut.
