Dana White open to booking Khabib Nurmagomedov vs. Tony Ferguson after UFC 254
UFC president, Dana White is willing to risk fate for the sixth time to book Khabib Nurmagomedov vs. Tony Ferguson.
For years now, the fight fans have wanted to see if Nurmagomedov vs. Ferguson. They have been booked five times before but have never made it to the Octagon due to botched weight cuts, fluke injuries, and most recently the COVID-19 pandemic.
Then, with Justin Gaethje beating Ferguson at UFC 249 many thought that fight would never happen. Yet, according to White, he says if Nurmagomedov wins, he would book the “El Cucuy” fight for the sixth time and wonders what would cancel it this time.
“If Khabib does beat Gaethje, you get Tony Ferguson another fight, which we’re working on right now. And hopefully, that fight with Khabib happens because I know people want to see it,” Dana White said to Sports Illustrated. “I don’t think I’ve ever seen a fight fall apart as many times as those two. It almost scares me to make the fight again. What’s going to happen? An asteroid comes to earth? That’s the level of bad this thing is.”
Khabib Nurmagomedov is set to defend his lightweight title against Justin Gaethje in the main event of UFC 254. It is one of the most anticipated fights of 2020. Many pundits are also calling it the hardest fight of his UFC tenure.
Tony Ferguson, meanwhile, is coming off a TKO loss to Gaethje. He has been linked to a fight with Dustin Poirier. Yet, due to pay demands, the fight was not made but as White says they are working on a fight for him. He is the former interim lightweight champion and has notable wins over the likes of Kevin Lee, Anthony Pettis, and Donald Cerrone among countless others.
There is no question Nurmagomedov vs. Ferguson is a fight many fans want to see and it could happen after UFC 254.
