Dana White says Arizona is an option for May 30 UFC event
Arizona could be the destination for the UFC May 30 card.
During the UFC on ESPN 8 post-fight press conference, UFC President Dana White said Arizona is the target if Nevada is off the table.
“That’s 100 percent where I’ll go,” White said. “Now I have to get the thumbs up for Nevada, hopefully we’re doing this next fight in the Apex cause if not, we’ll be working on Arizona next.”
Arizona Gov. Doug Ducey lifted the state’s stay-home order on Tuesday, May 12. Ducey allowed gyms and pools to open on Wednesday, May 13, the last remaining facilities not allowed to operate in Arizona.
Only two bouts are officially booked for the UFC May 30 card as of now. Straweweights Hannah Cifers and Mackenzie Dern are scheduled to compete, both coming off of losses.
Klidson Abreu and Jamahal Hill are also slated for a light-heavyweights matchup.
The UFC finished the last of three events in a week span at the VyStar Veterans Memorial Arena in Jacksonville, Florida. The UFC is the first sports organization to hold events in the United States during the COVID-19 pandemic.
The promotion originally planned to host UFC 249 in Brooklyn, New York on April 18. It fell through due to the coronavirus outbreak.
The UFC then resorted to going to tribal lands, targeting the Tachi Palace Casino Resort in California. The plan was shut down after California Gov. Gavin Newsom expressed his concerns to Disney, the parent company of UFC’s broadcast partner ESPN.
The UFC announced Jacksonville as the host city on April 23.
