UFC champ Daniel Cormier to coach high school wrestling team
UFC light heavyweight champion Daniel Cormier is expected to named as a high school wrestling team coach tomorrow night pending school district approval. Cormier will replace Greg Varela as head coach for the Gilroy High School team in Gilroy, California.
Cormier, who will challenge UFC heavyweight champion Stipe Miocic at UFC 226 on July 7 in Las Vegas, would be taking over a team that has recorded an unprecedented 16 consecutive Central Coast Section team championships.
“I was a little surprised myself,” Gilroy principal Marco Sanchez said Tuesday about Cormier’s interest in the position. “He’s a resident of Gilroy, so he’s been in the community the past five or six years. He knows the wrestlers already. He’s looking for something to do in the next phase of his career, and he wants to do the coaching thing. I am excited about it, as is the community.”
Season 27 of the Ultimate Fighter will launch tonight on FS1. Cormier serves opposite Miocic as coaches over two teams of undefeated professional fighters.
