Daniel Cormier names potential UFC heavyweight opponents for Jon Jones
UFC analyst and commentator Daniel Cormier named potential heavyweight opponents for UFC heavyweight champion Jon Jones.
Cormier and Jones were once bitter rivals, but now that DC is retired, he calls Jones’ fights inside the Octagon. At UFC 285 earlier this year, Jones came in off a three-year layoff and submitted Ciryl Gane in the first round in one of his best UFC Octagon performances.
Following the win over Gane, Jones made his intentions known that he would like to fight former UFC heavyweight champion Stipe Miocic next. However, that fight has not been booked yet. Because it hasn’t been officially signed, when Sergei Pavlovich finished Curtis Blaydes at a recent UFC Fight Night card, it led to some fans and media suggesting that he could be Jones’ next opponent. So there are most certainly some big fights at heavyweight there for Jones.
Speaking on the “DC & RC” podcast, Cormier spoke about some of the potential opponents that could be there waiting for Jones. While DC admits that he thought Gane would have been a tougher fight for Jones than it ended up being, he also thinks that fighters such as Pavlovich and Miocic will present different problems for Jones, and that’s why he’s excited about those fights.
“I would like to see him continue to fight. I would like to see him fight guys like Sergei Pavlovich. I would like to see him in there with Stipe Miocic. And I do believe that there are some challenges for Jon Jones. I did not expect the Ciryl Gane fight to go in the way that it did, even though it was always a possibility. But that isn’t his hardest fight. I thought it was. It’s not his hardest fight, though. There are a couple out there still,” Cormier said (via MMAjunkie.com).
