Davey Grant Lands Devastating Combination to Finish Jonathan Martinez at UFC Vegas 21

UFC Fight Night: Edwards vs Muhammad will take place Saturday, March 13 from UFC APEX in Las Vegas.

In the main event, top contender Leon Edwards (18-3) makes his long anticipated return to the Octagon almost two years since his last bout. The Jamaican born will go face to face against Belal Muhammad (18-3), whil steps up on short notice following a dominant victory over Dhiego Lima on February 13 to compete in the biggest fight of his career.

In the co main, will be a light heavyweight clash between grappling specialist Misha Cirkunov and Ryan Spann.

Before all that, Jonathan Martinez and Davey Grant will compete in a bantamweight fight on the main card.

Martinez (13-3),  last walk to the cage was against Thomas Almeida on Fight Island back in October in a featherweight bout after previously missing the 135lbs mark. Martinez made it a short stay at featherweight, and will compete again in a bantamweight bout against Davey Grant but this time there was no trouble on the scales after successfully making weight.

Grant (12-4), returned to the UFC after a 21-month layoff last year earning two back to back wins against Grigori Popov winning a split decision  and then took on Martin Day in July – it was a three-round scrap and eventually saw Grant knock out Day out clean to earn the ‘performance of the night’ while fighting with a broken jaw.

Here’s how the fight played out round by round:

ROUND 1:

They touch gloves.  Martinez opens up with a leg kick, Grant returns. Battle of the leg kicks early. Martinez goes low with the kick. Both men trading leg kicks, Grant steps in and misses a combination with his hands. Grant tries to experiment and tries a spinning heel kick. Davey loading up on his hands trying to take of Martinez head of. Good stuff from both men, sharp and crisp striking. Martinez lands a big left and drops Grant – Martinez lunges to the ground and tries to land some bombs on the ground.

MyMMANews.com scores it: 10-9 to Jonathan Martinez

ROUND 2:

Back underway for round two. Grant putting the pressure on Martinez early. Wild misses from Grant. Both men stood in the centre and landing punches. Grant having a much better round here. Grant lands a HUGE right hook to the body and follows it up with a devastating left hook over the top of Martinez’s guard and it drops the American, ground and pound follow up from the Brit and the ref is forced to STOP the fight.

Official Result: Davey Grant (@DaveyGrantMMA) defeats Jonathan Martinez by KO (punch) at 3:03 of Round 2.
