David Haye on Joe Fournier, Lennox Lewis, and Evander Holyfield
David Haye takes on Joe Fournier under the Triller Fight Club banner on September 11th. Haye vs Fournier is a boxing bout that is part of Legends II.
This event transpires at Staples Center in Los Angeles, California, and broadcasts on FITE TV pay-per-view.
I spoke with the multi-division champion ahead of his return to the ring. The excerpt from my media day interaction with the former undisputed cruiserweight champion and world heavyweight titleholder can be found below.
Triller Fight Club: Legends II
You just addressed the question in relation to the modern crop of heavyweight guys. But I’d also seen an article indicating potentially some level of interest in fighting Lennox Lewis. Evander Holyfield is sort of teasing a comeback a little bit.
Obviously very focused on this fight here but entertaining the hypothetical you get the ideal outcome, could those sort of matches compel you to get out there for an additional bout?
David Haye
“Was asked about of all the living fighters, who in an ideal world you’d want to fight. I believe Lennox Lewis is one of the greatest to ever do it. Can’t see Lennox Lewis on his day losing to any heavyweight in history. I just think he’s that good. So I said if there was ever a heavyweight in the history that I’d love to have mixed it up with is Lennox Lewis. I don’t know is he 50 or in his 50s?”
“Haven’t heard any talk of him or Evander Holyfield. He’s probably another one of my all-time heroes. The only other fighter to have (unified the cruiserweight belts and captured heavyweight gold). He let me know it’s possible. He let me know the small guy can beat the big guy. It’s the size of the fight in the dog. Not the size of the dog in the fight.”
David Haye continued, “Now we’re watching (Mike) Tyson and Roy Jones do it. I heard there’s talk of Holyfield wanting to do something similar. I haven’t heard Lennox Lewis. But just to know that there’s a version of our reality where these crazy matchups are happening now, it’s exciting. But once again I don’t want to start thinking about dream matchups. When you know, Joe is a big banana skin. A giant banana skin that I cannot slip over on whatsoever. I will sweep up and put it in the trash. Can’t step on it and fall on my butt.”
