David Onama faces late replacement Garrett Armfield at UFC Vegas 58

Ugandan talent David Onama competes this weekend at UFC Vegas 58, as the Ultimate Fighting Championship has found him a late replacement opponent the week of the event.

UFC Vegas 58 is to go down on July 9, 2022, live from the UFC Apex in Enterprise, Nevada.

Onama was initially slated against Austin Lingo for this event, though Lingo was forced out of the bout earlier this week, and has since been replaced by debuting talent Garrett Armfield.

This is a very exciting match up for so many reasons.

Firstly, this is a rematch of each man’s final amateur fight back in February of 2018, and it went the distance.

Onama comes into the bout with a record of 9-1, and Armfield comes in with a record of 8-2.

Each of them have secured finishes in all of their victories thus far into their respective careers.

Onama went 10-0 as an amateur, capping off with his win over Armfield, while Armfield went 6-1 as an amateur, capping off with his defeat to Onama.

Onama’s amateur run saw him capture the Ultimate Blue Corner Battles featherweight championship, and he also won the FAC featherweight championship as a professional prior to joining the UFC.

As professionals, Onama has secured six of his wins via knockout with three submissions, and Armfield has secured five of his wins via knockout, also with three submissions. Quite similar aye?

It’s so good to hear the UFC found Onama a late replacement, and for it to be a rematch of their final amateur outings just makes it all that more interesting. Not to mention both men are straight up finishers, this is going to be a great fight!

There are some very high aspirations surrounding Onama, and now he’ll be facing the last man he couldn’t finish.

How do you see this stellar featherweight rematch going down?

I became a fan of combat sports when I was 12 years old. I was scrolling through the channels and landed upon Versus, where WEC was televised. Urijah Faber fought Jens Pulver for the second time that night. That's the first fight I ever saw, and I was immediately hooked. So eventually, I began covering the sport in the fourth quarter of 2018, and have since started writing about animals as well.
