Deiveson Figueiredo wins trilogy bout, reclaims UFC flyweight title at UFC 270
The Ultimate Fighting Championship returns to us tonight, January 22, 2022 for the first pay-per-view event, as well as the first and second title fights of the year at UFC 270.
UFC heavyweight champion Francis Ngannou headlines the event opposing interim champion Ciryl Gane, while a trilogy ensues for the UFC flyweight championship between champion Brandon Moreno and former champion Deiveson Figueiredo.
Being the third time these two have met, they’re the first pair of fighters in UFC history to fight one another three-straight times, without any match ups in between.
The first ended in a draw after a Fight of the Year candidate back in December of 2020, while Moreno submitted Figueiredo in round three of the rematch to claim the title last year in 2021. Now they fight for the third time at the start of 2022!
Continue reading to see how this championship trilogy bout went down:
Official Result: Deiveson Figueiredo def. Brandon Moreno via unanimous decision (48-47, 48-47, 48-47)
The two feel one another out for half of the first round, before Moreno starts to get his punches going.
Figueiredo returns with some calf kicks, which he continues to land all night. Both men get stunned throughout, it was very reminiscent of their first and second fights.
Moreno seemed to have more impact on his punches, but Figueiredo hung in there and fired back with vicious strikes of his own. This was a very close fight that could’ve gone either way, both men looked great.
It did appear Moreno had a lack of respect for what Figueiredo had to offer, and it became a difficult fight, as well as an unfortunate result considering.
Is it time we see the pair fight four times in the UFC?
There are other contenders, but it feels inevitable at some point.
