Drew Dober KO’s Rafael Alves with vicious body shot in third round at UFC 277

The Ultimate Fighting Championship returns to us tonight, July 30, 2022, for UFC 277, going down live from the American Airlines Arena in Dallas, Texas.

Headlining the event is a bantamweight championship rematch between current champion Julianna Pena (11-4) and former champion, no. 1 ranked Amanda Nunes (21-5).

Co-headlining the event is also a championship rematch, this one going down in the flyweight division between former champion, no. 1 ranked Brandon Moreno (19-6-2), who faces no. 2 ranked Kai Kara-France (24-9) for the interim title in the co-main event of the evening.

Our preliminary co-main event came in the lightweight division between Drew Dober (24-11) and Rafael Alves (20-10).

Official Result: Drew Dober def. Rafael Alves via KO (body punch) at 1:30 of round three

Both men open up the bout sharp on the feet, but Alves initiates his grappling by jumping on a mounted guillotine choke seemingly out of no where, just like he did to Marc Diakiese in his UFC debut.

Dober is able to get his neck out of harms way however, and eventually works his way back up to his feet.

Dober has a better second round, as he really begins to wear on Alves with his heavy pressure. He’s also letting his strikes go, and he opens up the round with a few solid round kicks to the body.

This took a lot out of Alves, who wasn’t able to do much for the entire second round, up until there were about 50 seconds left on the clock when he got poked in the eye. After a two minute break, Alves came out swinging and Dober held his ground doing the same.

That eye poke may have changed this fight going into the third and final round.

Dober continues with the heavy pressure in the third and lands a vicious left shovel hook to the body and Alves immediately drops. Another knockout win in the books for Drew Dober!

I became a fan of combat sports when I was 12 years old. I was scrolling through the channels and landed upon Versus, where WEC was televised. Urijah Faber fought Jens Pulver for the second time that night. That's the first fight I ever saw, and I was immediately hooked. So eventually, I began covering the sport in the fourth quarter of 2018, and have since started writing about animals as well.
