Dustin Poirier confirms that Conor McGregor is donating $500k to his foundation for this UFC 257 fight
The way this main event bout between Dustin Poirier and Conor McGregor materialized was interesting. It seemed as though McGregor called out Poirier out of nowhere. One day he offered up a fight with Poirier on Twitter, an “exhibition bout” he called it at first, outside of the UFC. Of course, Poirier agreed right away but that didn’t stop McGregor from sweetening the deal. He offered up $500,000 dollars to Poirier’s The Good Fight Foundation. The wheels were turning and it seemed the fight would be made. However, the exhibition idea, as grandiose as it was would not fly without the UFC’s involvement.
The two were eventually matched up in the UFC’s lightweight division and are now just one day out from making the walk to the Octagon in Abu Dhabi. Now that the fight was official and not an exhibition, what about the donation? Well, McGregor said he would still donate the money to the foundation and it seems that he is holding true to his promise.
“I don’t want to make it seem like we’re up here giving each other back massages but Conor, I just want to clear the air: Conor’s team, McGregor Sport & Entertainment, did reach out to my foundation and they are starting the process toward that donation,” Poirier said during the UFC 257 pre-fight press conference (per MMAJunkie.com). “So Conor, man-to-man, you’re going to help a lot of people with that.”
It was also confirmed through representatives of McGregor Sports & Entertainment as well per MMAJunkie.com. The charity is run by Dustin Poirier and his wife and works to raise money to “benefit their hometown in Louisiana to help underserved communities, from food insecurity to health care and environmental disaster relief.”
The money raised from the UFC 257 event will go specifically to “money to help build an MMA gym for struggling youth with membership fees covered in exchange for good conduct and dedication to school work.”
