Dustin Poirier says he wants to fight Colby Covington at UFC 277
UFC lightweight contender Dustin Poirier says he wants to fight top-ranked welterweight fighter Colby Covington at UFC 277.
Poirier and Covington used to be teammates at American Top Team, but they have become bitter enemies over the years. Both men have had choice words to say about each other in the media and online, with Covington talking about Poirier’s family, and Poirier telling Covington that it’s “on sight” when he sees Covington in person. This is a feud that goes back several years now, and there is major bad blood between these two rivals. But with both men competing in different weight classes up until this point, it’s not a fight that the UFC has tried to book. Now, though, it looks like the fight has legs.
Taking to his social media on Friday night, Poirier posted a tweet and tagged Covington on it, saying that “The Diamond” accepts a fight against “Chaos” on July 30 at UFC 277. The event is scheduled to take place in Dallas, Texas, and Poirier vs. Covington would obviously be a massive fight added to it.

It will be interesting if Covington accepts Poirier’s callout. Right now Covington is coming off of a dominant decision win over Jorge Masvidal at UFC 272, but following that fight, there was an alleged street attack by Masvidal that resulted in Covington chipping a took and breaking his Rolex. Since that incident, we haven’t heard much from Covington. Originally, the UFC was planning on booking Covington against Khamzat Chimaev, but there hasn’t been much chatter about that since the Masvidal incident. It’s possible that the UFC could still book Covington vs. Chimaev when he’s ready to return, but now that Poirier has piped up saying he wants the fight, perhaps the UFC will book it instead.
