Alvarez leaves the UFC with a 4-3-1 record with his most recent fight ending in a loss to Dustin Poirier which was a rematch after their first fight ended in a no-contest back in 2017. In his career, Alvarez has a career record of 29-6-1 and has been a champion in every promotion he was fought in. During his announcement video, Alvarez said he left a shelf in his trophy case empty, letting everyone know he’s focused on becoming the ONE FC champion.
Alvarez achieved UFC gold when he defeated Rafael dos Anjos in 2016 and was part of the UFC’s first ever fight card to take place at Madison Square Garden, where he would ultimately go on to lose the belt to Conor McGregor at UFC 205.
ESPN MMA Insider Ariel Helwani tweeted after the signing that he believes 2019 will be a big year for ONE FC, which could only mean there are big plans for Alvarez’s tenure with the promotion.
Not-so-bold prediction: 2019 will be a very big year for ONE Championship. 👃
