Eddie Wineland releases statement after getting a ‘proper welcome to the Sugar Show’

Eddie Wineland has issued a statement following his first-round knockout loss to Sean O’Malley at UFC 250.

The former WEC bantamweight champion was returning to the Octagon after a year away to battle the surging contender. It was opening up the pay-per-view in a fight many were expected to see. O’Malley was a sizeable favorite but some thought the savvy veteran could pose some challenges to the undefeated prospect. Yet, that was not the case as “Sugar” scored a devastating first-round knockout win.

Following the loss, Wineland took to Instagram to release a statement on the loss.

“Just got my proper welcome to the Sugar Show. Congratulations, Sean,” Wineland said.

With the loss, Eddie Wineland is now 24-14-1 as a pro. Before the loss, Wineland scored a TKO win over Grigory Popov at UFC 238 in June of 2019. The win snapped his two-fight losing skid where he dropped decisions to Alejandro Perez and John Dodson. The veteran is currently 6-8 inside the Octagon with notable wins over Brad Pickett, Scott Jorgensen, and Frankie Saenz. He also for UFC interim gold but came up short against Renan Barao.

Sean O’Malley, meanwhile, is now 12-0 as a pro including being 4-0 inside the Octagon after earning his way into the Las Vegas-based promotion after winning on the Contender Series. The 25-year-old is looking to return soon after losing two years of his career due to a tainted supplement.

It was no doubt a highlight-reel knockout which O’Malley said he was looking for in the lead up to the fight. Who Sean O’Malley will fight next is to be seen, but there is no doubt he is a massive star and could very well get a top-10 opponent next time out.

Regardless, Eddie Wineland was all class in handling his knockout loss to Sean O’Malley at UFC 250 and getting a proper welcome to the Sugar Show.
