Floyd Mayweather, Conor McGregor in “final negotiations” for 2023 boxing match

Quite unexpectedly, Floyd Mayweather had told Mail Sport that he and UFC Star Conor McGregor are in “final negotiations” for a boxing match to occur in 2023. Weather it’s a boxing match or an exhibition match is yet to be determined although Mayweather would prefer an exhibition according to reports.

The news breaks ahead of Mayweather’s upcoming fight against RIZIN fighter Mikuru Asakura this weekend. You can purchase that fight on FITE at the link below.  The fight card begins at 11pm ET on Saturday, September 24 and can be purchased for $29.99.

Floyd Mayweather vs. Conor McGregor 2

Floyd Mayweather and Conor McGregor famously fought in 2016 as McGregor was at the height of his popularity. Mayweather was tied with Rocky Marciano at 49-0 and would fight McGregor to break the long-standing record as best undefeated fighter, which he would by knocking McGregor out in round 10.

McGregor would parlay his boxing bout with Mayweather and the $75 million reportedly earned and buy up a whiskey and rebrand it to Proper 12. He’s had no such luck in the cage, however. McGregor subsequently lost his bout to Khabib Nurmagomedov and took some time off. He returned to face Cowboy Cerrone a year later and got his only win since winning the UFC Lightweight Title in 2016 against Eddie Alvarez. He’d take more time off after the Cowboy fight and returned another year later only to be knocked out by Dustin Poirier and rematch the Louisiana native, losing again, breaking his leg in the process. Currently, McGregor is filming a Road House remake alongside Jake Gyllenhaal.

Floyd Mayweather has been on an exhibition tour since beating McGregor. He beat Tenshin Nasukawa in his first business venture with RIZIN. He then went on to famously fight Logan Paul in an exhibition match that went to a “draw.” And most recently, Mayweather fought Don Moore in May of this year.

While there are still details to be ironed out, we could be seeing Floyd Mayweather and Conor McGregor square off again. I, for one, don’t know how to feel about that.
