Floyd Mayweather Jr Announces 2020 Return… but where?
The greatest boxer of his time, Floyd Mayweather Jr (50-0), announced via social media that he plans a 2020 return to the ring. The last time Mayweather was in action was on December 31, 2018 when he took on Tenshin Nasukawa at Rizin 14. The bout was a boxing exhibition which saw Mayweather win via first round TKO. There are many intriguing matchups out there for the former world champion of every major organization.
The Announcement
Early Friday November 22, 2019 an Instagram post by Mayweather stated, “coming out of retirement in 2020.” This came after an Instagram post showing Mayweather sitting next to UFC President Dana White with the caption, “@danawhite and I working together again to bring the world another spectacular event in 2020.” The post concluded with four hashtags including boxing, UFC, MMA, mayweatherpromotions. Is Mayweather telling us who his return is against in his six word post telling us of his return?
A Picture Worth a Thousand Words
The phrase, “A picture is worth a thousand words,” could possibly be coming into play for combat sports fans. In the Instagram post telling the word of his 2020 return, Mayweather is wearing the same shorts he wore when he defeated Canelo Alvarez in September 2013, snapping Alvarez’s 43 fight unbeaten streak. The Ring recently named Alvarez their pound for pound king, a crown worn by Mayweather in 2013. Since his loss to Mayweather, Alvarez has gone on to dominate the boxing world. He has earned an 11-0-1 record winning world titles in multiple weight classes. A possible snag in the road is Canelo’s contract with streaming service, DAZN, but for a fight of this magnitude, there’s money to be made on all ends.
With the incorporation of White, it’s possible the bout could be another crossover fight. Several UFC fights such as Khabib Nurmagomedov and Tony Ferguson among others have all called out Mayweather. On the other hand, another matchup with Manny Pacquiao is a possibility. Pacquiao looked back to his old ways after his most recent decision victory of highly touted Keith Thurman. With 2020 just around the corner, hopefully more information will be revealed soon.
