Gegard Mousasi vs Johnny Eblen targeted to headline Bellator event in May

Gegard Mousasi vs Johnny Eblen on the horizon

It appears Gegard Mousasi already has his next title defense lined up, just one month following his most recent defense over then undefeated Austin Vanderford.

That bout saw him victorious via TKO just 85 seconds into the opening round.

Vanderford came into that contest with a record of 11-0 (5-0 in Bellator), just like Mousasi’s next challenger Johnny Eblen, who also comes in with a perfect 11-0 (7-0 in Bellator) record.

This bout is expected to headline a Bellator event, presumably Bellator 280, hosted in May at a to-be-determined date and venue.

Eblen is very good at what Mousasi’s fallen victim to in the past, and that’s a good wrestling base with heavy top pressure. He showed that off in his latest appearance, as he handily defeated fellow top contender John Salter earlier this month at Bellator 276.

This was Salter’s first promotional defeat to a non-champion.

Nonetheless, that’s what a lot of us thought going into Mousasi’s last encounter with No. 1 ranked Vanderford, and we saw what happened there. Eblen has since taken Vanderford’s No. 1 spot in the rankings, as he prepares for his first championship clash with one of the best to ever do it.

Many of us are upset that No. 5 ranked Anatoly Tokov hasn’t gotten his shot yet, as he’s sitting quietly in the division with a record of 30-2 (6-0 in Bellator), he’s beat everyone put in front of him.

His latest defeat is to Ramazan Emeev via majority decision in an M-1 Global middleweight championship bout.

Emeev is doing well in the UFC right now, going 5-2 thus far in the promotion.

Tokov was actually the first man Emeev couldn’t finish in over four years heading into their bout.

Nonetheless, we have Gegard Mousasi’s next defense lined up, and he is matched up with a very worthy challenger in Johnny Eblen.

I became a fan of combat sports when I was 12 years old. I was scrolling through the channels and landed upon Versus, where WEC was televised. Urijah Faber fought Jens Pulver for the second time that night. That's the first fight I ever saw, and I was immediately hooked. So eventually, I began covering the sport in the fourth quarter of 2018, and have since started writing about animals as well.
